Job description

AXA Climate and ETHZ are looking for a joint intern who will support applied research in the domain of agriculture and biodiversity risk management.

Agriculture performance is driven by local weather conditions. These conditions are themselves driven by large scale meteorological phenomenon such as ENSO. The objective of this project will be to understand agrological risk correlations at regional and global level. Very concretely, the intern will work on a combination of crop statistics and satellite data to produce a risk correlation that can be later use by our underwriters in their crop risk assessment functions.

The intern will be fully integrated and supervised by one or more underwriter and might be conducted to support the team in risk analysis exercise to support the business units.

Your main task will include
• Put together a clean yield database from countries’ national crop statistics
• Extend and/or complete yield statistics using satellite proxies such as NDVI
• Establish correlations between crops and regions at global level
• Design a tool that underwriters and risk analysts can easily use to evaluate the diversification of our portfolio

Your work will by key in the capacity allocation of our agriculture insurance team.


Preferred experience

Education:
• MSc in agricultural/environmental sciences or any related fields.

Skills:
• Strong scientific skills: statistics, probabilities
• Coding experience with R or Python is required, experience with geodata or remotely sensed data is a plus
• Treatment of various data sets: reanalysis, satellite, etc.
• Soft skills: strong autonomy, Integrity, Team spirit
• A strong motivation to have a positive impact for our planet and create actionable change

Experience / Background:
• Knowledge of agriculture is a plus
• Knowledge of financial risk management is a plus

Languages:
• Fluency in English required, any other language is a plus
