Job description

AFP is looking for a dynamic, energetic English-language reporter, who speaks Hebrew, to join its busy Jerusalem bureau for a six-month contract that will eventually be renewable, helping to shape the news file from Israel and the Palestinian territories. The coverage has been completely dominated by the Israel-Hamas war since the October 7 attack. The days are very long, often fraught, so the job requires a cool head and excellent writing skills, as well as a commitment to quality and accuracy.

A keen interest in and knowledge of the issues surrounding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is essential, as Jerusalem’s stories are never far from the top of the news agenda.

You should also have a keen eye for and interest in all aspects of life in both societies, from music to culture, science, and hi-tech. Israel and the Palestinian territories are young and vibrant societies, and there is wide client interest in broader stories about what is shaping and shaking daily trends.

You will work under the authority of the bureau chief and his deputy, as well as the regional editors-in-chief in Nicosia.

You should have a keen eye for the visual and multimedia aspect of coverage and closely coordinate with the photo, video, and graphics departments.

You should be familiar with the issues involved in handling user-generated content and AFP’s guidelines concerning the use of UGC, especially in finding and verify amateur videos.

You will closely monitor social media and strictly adhere to the agency’s guidelines on social media activity.

You will contribute to the fight against misinformation by helping fact-checkers in the AFP network and generally supporting the development of the digital investigation. Online training is available here.

As a general rule, you commit to respecting AFP’s ethics charter as well as all the editorial guidelines in force and the Agency’s style guide.

You must be ready to work long days and a wide range of hours, including early mornings and late nights, as well as weekends, and to be on call.

This is a temporary, six-month job that could be extended. But in an ever-changing media environment, the nature of the job could also evolve in line with coverage demands and the requirements of an increasingly diverse client base.
