The position

Job description

AFP, one of the world’s leading news agencies, is seeking a Kuala-Lumpur based Digital Verification Editor to fight against mis/disinformation in Malaysia and Singapore.

The role is an exciting opportunity to be a part of AFP’s fast-growing fact-checking network, which has seen it take a leading role in the global fight against mis/disinformation.

The successful candidate will work with the Asia Pacific regional editing team to guide stories from pitch to publication. You will work closely with the Malaysia digital verification reporter in the Kuala Lumpur bureau to oversee their fact checks and monitor misinformation circulating locally. You will also write fact checks in English and Malay on misinformation circulating in Malaysia, Singapore and across the region.

From time to time, you will also pitch and write stories on mis/disinformation for the wire.

While the editor will specialise in fact-checking, duties will also extend to other reporting roles in the bureau depending on the demands of the daily news coverage.

In an ever-changing media environment, the nature of the job could evolve in line with coverage demands and the requirements of an increasingly diverse client base.

The successful candidate will contribute to the fight against mis/disinformation and is expected to undertake digital verification training.

Preferred experience

  • The position requires an agile journalist who can easily navigate online mis/disinformation and demonstrate expertise in digital verification techniques and tools and a good understanding of major social media platforms — including Facebook, Twitter, TikTok, YouTube and encrypted chat apps

  • Candidates must have the ability to write and edit Malay-language articles to a native standard and have a strong command of English. Other regional languages would be an asset

  • Candidates should have precise writing skills, strong editorial judgment, an eye for detail and good communication skills

  • Previous fact-checking experience is a bonus

  • The ideal candidate will show abilities to work in a fast-paced multimedia newsroom, meet tight deadlines and multitask

  • Other media skills — including in photography, video and graphics — would also be valuable
