Job description

The international news agency Agence France-Presse (AFP) is seeking an experienced, creative photographer to join its Jakarta bureau.

This is an extraordinary opportunity for the right candidate to join the staff of a global news organization with bureaus around the world, offering exceptional career development possibilities.

The successful candidate will become part of a multi-media team covering both daily news and off-diary features. They will be expected to research and plan coverage, generate and execute original story ideas including photo essays, all in close coordination with the bureau’s editorial, text and video teams.

Photo coverage in Jakarta includes a wide range of topics from social, environmental, politics and official visits to sports and lifestyle. There will be regular assignments within Indonesia and possibly overseas.

They must be able to handle and authenticate user-generated content (UGC) during breaking news situations, including ensuring proper authorisations/transfer of copyright are obtained before using UGC images when needed.

The successful candidate will contribute to the fight against misinformation by helping factcheckers in the network and ensure they are trained in the various methods of online verification, now indispensable for all journalists. Online training is available here.

The job requires flexibility in terms of hours, includes working evenings and weekends when necessary.

In an ever-changing media environment, the nature of the job could evolve in line with coverage demands and the requirements of an increasingly diverse client base.

Preferred experience

  • Several years of daily news experience in Indonesia, ideally in either a news agency or newspaper environment

  • Native level proficiency in Bahasa Indonesia and fluent English are required, while other regional languages would be an asset

  • A proven ability to shoot multiple subjects across different interests, rapidly producing vivid and attention-grabbing images on real-time deadlines

  • Ability to shoot short video contributions is essential

  • Extensive knowledge of Indonesia and current affairs in the country, with a wide range of sources and contacts

  • Experience in covering sports will be an advantage

  • Good team player, able to work well with colleagues in photo, text, video and digital verification
