Job description

We help our clients navigate legal, regulatory and international arbitration proceedings while supporting strategic decision making and public policy debates around the world. Delivering incisive interpretation of complex economic issues has made us a global leader in this field. FTI Consulting, a top-tier international economic advisory firm, is looking to recruit an Intern for its energy team based in Paris to support its rapid growth.

What You’ll Do

The intern will work on high-stakes economic and business issues, covering five essential topics relating to the energy industry.

The Intern will join a team of economists, former industry practitioners and regulators who work on high-stakes, sophisticated economic and strategic issues, along four dimensions of expertise in the energy sector:

Strategy – FTI Consulting advises energy companies and governments on how to position and invest in the decarbonisation of energy systems – Examples:

o Advising a Western European infrastructure company on the possible business models and required financial public support, for the production of renewable gas (hydrogen or methane);
o Advising an African government on its 10-year gas import strategy, in the context of strong energy demand growth

Dispute – FTI Consulting acts as an independent economic expert in complex and high-stakes disputes to advise tribunals on energy markets issues and the quantification of damages – Examples:
o Assessing the lost profits of a terminated hydropower plant project in Southern Europe in an investment dispute between a power company and the State;
o Assessing the economic implications of the determination of the disputed maritime border between two African countries, focusing on offshore oil and gas production;

Regulation – FTI Consulting advises energy ministries, regulators and regulated companies on the design and impact of regulatory regimes applicable to electricity, gas, carbon, fuels and related markets – Examples:

 o Designing a new, comprehensive, incentive-based regulatory regime for the electricity sector over the next 12 years, in an developing country aiming to further liberalize its electricity sector
 o Assessing the quantitative impact of several proposed reforms of the EU’s carbon market on carbon emissions, carbon price, electricity price and investments in future power generation

Transaction – FTI Consulting advises investors and contracting parties on energy asset transactions and long-term energy supply and infrastructure contracts – Examples:

 o Conducting commercial due diligence on a French smart meter company for a potential international acquirer
 o Negotiating a 25-year Power Purchase Agreement for a new 400 MW power plant for the Energy Ministry of an African country

The intern will be based at FTI Consulting’s central Paris office, with sporadic travels within Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) if permitted. He or She will join a team of about 45 members specialising in energy across EMEA. The intern will work within focused teams, supervised by senior professionals who will help frame analyses and transfer their expertise to help the intern develop his/her industry understanding and analytical skills.

Preferred experience

Intern will be expected to work on several strategic, economic or regulatory projects at the same time, delivering their work with increasing autonomy.

To deliver effective analyses, the successful candidates should have demonstrated a strong interest in the energy industry, by their degree and/or previous internship experience, ideally on strategic, economic and regulatory issues in the energy sector (electricity, natural gas, oil, coal, renewables…).

  • A robust quantitative background to perform detailed economic analyses. Knowledge in financial analysis, although not a requirement, would be positively assessed.

  • A high level of rigour in work execution, with attention to details.

  • Strong communications skills, both orally and in written form, which will allow the candidate to present his or her work to decision-makers in an effective and convincing manner.

  • The candidates must be able to speak and write fluently in English. Any additional language will be positively assessed.
