TOOL & DIE MAKER

SUMMARY
Tool and Die Maker individual analyzes specifications, lay out metal stock, set-up and operates machine tools, and fits and assembles parts to fabricate and repair metalworking dies, cutting tools, jigs and fixtures, gauges, and machine by performing the following duties.
Process methods in accordance with product specifications and quality standards.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Plans the sequence of operations, fabrication assembly and layout of all types of tools and dies from tool drawings, written and verbal instructions.
• Sets up and operates Tool and Die-making equipment and grinders.
• Works to tolerance as close as .0001 inch.
• Study blueprints, sketches, models, or specifications to plan sequences of operations for fabricating tools, dies, or assemblies.
• Visualize and compute dimensions, sizes, shapes, and tolerances of assemblies, based on specifications.
• Lift, position, and secure machined parts on surface plates or worktables, using hoists, vises, v-blocks, or angle plates.
• Load and unload items from production machines manually or by using hand tools.
• Inspect finished dies for smoothness, contour conformity, and defects.
• Inspects finished molds and pads to ensure dimensions, finish, clearances, angles and contours conform to blueprint or other specifications.
• Mark or tag identification on parts.
• Conduct test runs with completed tools or dies to ensure that parts meet specifications; make adjustments as necessary.
• Examines repairs and maintains standard or previously used dies, tools, and jigs and fixtures, and recommends design modifications regarding construction and function of part.
• File, grind, shim, and adjust different parts to properly fit them together.
• Fit and assemble parts to make, repair, or modify dies, jigs, gauges, and tools, using machine tools and hand tools.
• Smooth and polish flat and contoured surfaces of parts or tools, using scrapers, abrasive stones, files, emery cloths, or power grinders.
• Verify dimensions, alignments, and clearances of finished parts for conformance to specifications, using measuring instruments such as calipers, gauge blocks, micrometers, and dial indicators.
• Able to identify, perform and troubleshoot tooling operations in manufacturing for improved quality and tooling life.
• May represent Factory/Department manufacturing on cross-functional teams, safety committees or other in-house committees.
• Able to assist and train less qualified machine operators as needed in use of equipment, methods, and documentation.
• Reports any safety violation, machining equipment misusage and/or improperly performed work to supervisor.
• Report any malfunctioning equipment to leads or immediate supervisors.
• Keeps work area and equipment clean.
• Demonstrated technical knowledge and experience in reading and interpreting blueprints, use shop and measuring tools and precision inspection instruments.
• Relies on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job.
• Relies on experience and judgment to plan, organize, and accomplish set goals and objectives.
• Familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field.
• Works under limited supervision with a certain degree of creativity and latitude is required.

• May assist and/or suggest waste elimination initiatives specifically related to the function and department such as production material recycle or removal opportunities.
• FOR PROCESSING FACTORY: Identifies Heat Treat for tools, fixtures, and dies, etc.
• Performs a variety of other tasks and duties.

Supervisory Responsibilities
This position has no supervisory responsibilities. May assist in the technical coaching of trainees &/or operators.
ESSENTIAL JOB REQUIREMENTS SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Education and/or Experience
• High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED).
• Working experience in fitting manufacturing environment.
• Advance knowledge of tool and die procedures.
• Working knowledge with quality.
• A minimum of 3 years equivalent combination of technical education and experience.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints, use precision inspection instruments, and set up and operate all tool room machinery.
Language Skills
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and basic technical procedures. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to other employees of the organization.
Mathematical Skills
Ability to apply basic mathematical concepts and calculations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, ratios and standard units of measurements). Knowledge of simple geometry is preferred.
Reasoning Ability
Ability to define problems collects data, establish facts and follow instructions in written and basic diagram formats. Ability to perform and apply different problem solving techniques, handle internal/external situations and multi-task functions.
Computer Skills
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have basic knowledge of mainframe computer systems, and be familiar with Spreadsheet and Word Processing software.
