Beginning of 20th century : Establishment of Mott & Hay (1902) and of Sir M MacDonald & Partners (1921)
The Mott MacDonald Group was formed in 1989 with the merger of two long-established and well-known international engineering consultancies – Mott, Hay & Anderson, renowned for its contribution to transportation engineering, and Sir M MacDonald & Partners, distinguished by a long tradition of water-related projects.
This landmark union began our progression towards the dynamic and continually evolving organisation we are today, now operating from 180 principal offices in 50 countries across 12 core sectors. Amongst those, the French entity was created in 2010.
Much of our growth has been organic, with key acquisitions accelerating our development into one of the most diverse multinational, multiskilled consultancies.

What is it that makes you excited to get up in the morning? Many of our colleagues joined Mott MacDonald because they wanted to make a positive difference. As an organisation, we do too: we want to improve society by considering social outcomes in everything we do, relentlessly focusing on excellence and digital innovation, transforming our clients’ businesses, our communities and employee opportunities.
In France, that means we support our clients in their journey through sustainable businesses. We help transitioning to carbon neutral operations, we assist in the deployment of E-mobility solutions, and more broadly we contribute to improve living conditions in French cities and territories.
Our Code brings together all that makes Mott MacDonald unique.
Whether we face an everyday dilemma or something more serious, as individuals or as a business, Our Code is here to help us make good decisions and do what’s right. By setting out our commitment to acting with integrity and our expectations of all colleagues and those we work with, Our Code challenges us to work with each other, our partners, clients and communities in a way that builds trust and mutual respect.
Our Code applies to everyone who works for Mott MacDonald, and sets out our standards and expectations on the issues that matter to us, including: -Respecting our people -Conducting our business with integrity -Protecting our assets and reputation -Delivering value to society
We deliver on our promises
We always care about the human and environmental impact of what we do
We constantly stretch our thinking to find extra value for our clients and their end-users
We drive change and use it to create opportunity
We act on our belief that there is always a better way
Our CSR vision is to engage with our communities and not-for-profit organisations to impact society.
To achieve this, we consider the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals to deliver skills-based volunteering initiatives. This primarily involves using our industry and professional knowledge to make immediate and long-lasting contributions that reduce the inequalities people face.
In addition, we collaborate for charitable giving and to raise awareness for a range of causes that our people are passionate about.
As part of our approach to corporate social responsibility (CSR), we build strategic relationships with community organisations, including not-for-profit bodies, and enable our people to volunteer their knowledge and skills to improve the prospects and wellbeing of local people, particularly those facing barriers in society. This includes supporting programmes to create opportunities for unemployed, under-represented and under-employed people :
We’ve partnered with Renaisi, a social enterprise, with a vision for strong, inclusive communities where everyone can thrive. We piloted an online mentoring programme to provide one-to-one support to unemployed and underemployed refugees in the UK with professional experience and qualifications from their respective countries. The successes from the pilot programme included some of the refugees feeling more confident in their job search, improving their CVs and finding professional employment within their disciplines.
We have continued to support RedR as a patron, as well as through fundraising and by recruiting additional champions to increase awareness. We’re particularly grateful to RedR for their resilience to deliver key projects – despite the ongoing uncertainty and challenges of the pandemic – to upskill people to effectively respond to disasters in communities across the globe. Their recent projects include delivering capacity[1]building training as part of the Venezuelan refugee crisis in Colombia, responding to the earthquake in Haiti, and running the Climate Change Adaptation and Disaster Risk Reduction project in the Philippines, Bangladesh and East Africa.
Across Mott MacDonald’s consulting business, the total carbon footprint of its operations in 2020 amounted to 19,110 tonnes of CO2 equivalent. This represented a 45% decrease in absolute emissions compared to its 2018 baseline and a 37% absolute emissions reduction compared to its 2019 footprint. This was partly due to actions taken, such as a 30% fall in global energy emissions by switching to renewables across most of our offices throughout the globe.
