Lead Data Engineer

About the Role

We are seeking a highly experienced Lead Data Engineer to join our team and play a crucial role in shaping our data infrastructure and strategy. As our Lead Data Engineer, you will work directly under the Head of Software while operating as a peer-level senior technical leader. You will be responsible for establishing and maintaining robust data systems, managing a diverse data team comprising both data engineers and data scientists, and ensuring seamless interoperability between hospital systems and our FHIR facade.

NB : We are looking for people working from EU, preferably France, with working rights in EU. 

Key Responsibilities

Technical Leadership

  • Design, implement, and oversee scalable data architecture that supports our healthcare applications
  • Establish and maintain robust ETL processes and data pipelines
  • Create and enforce data quality standards and governance policies
  • Lead the implementation of FHIR-based interoperability solutions for healthcare data exchange
  • Design and implement tracking systems to monitor data flows and system performance
  • Architect solutions that bridge hospital systems with our healthcare platform

Team Leadership

  • Manage a cross-functional data team that includes both data engineers and data scientists
  • Provide technical direction to data engineers on infrastructure and pipeline development
  • Guide data scientists on model implementation, deployment, and integration with data systems
  • Develop and mentor team members to enhance their technical capabilities across engineering and science domains
  • Lead technical interviews and make hiring decisions for both engineering and science roles within the data team
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to align data strategy with business objectives
  • Work in tandem with the Head of Software to establish the data infrastructure roadmap

Analytics & Business Intelligence

  • Design and implement dashboards that visualize key business metrics
  • Identify and track relevant KPIs based on business context and requirements
  • Translate complex data patterns into actionable business insights
  • Ensure data accessibility for various stakeholders while maintaining security and compliance
  • Bridge the gap between data engineering infrastructure and data science applications

Required Qualifications

Experience

  • 9+ years of relevant professional experience in data engineering roles
  • Proven track record of designing and implementing enterprise-level data solutions
  • Experience leading small technical teams (2-5 people) that include both data engineers and data scientists
  • Demonstrated experience with healthcare data systems, preferably with FHIR implementation
  • Background in setting up and optimizing data pipelines and ETL processes

Technical Skills

  • Expert-level proficiency in SQL and database management
  • Strong knowledge of data modeling, data warehousing, and data lake architectures
  • Extensive experience with ETL tools and frameworks
  • Practical understanding of machine learning and deep learning concepts and their distinctions
  • Working knowledge of data science workflows and model deployment processes
  • Experience with healthcare interoperability standards, particularly FHIR
  • Proficiency in implementing tracking systems and monitoring solutions
  • Ability to create effective data visualization dashboards and reports

Knowledge in Data Science & Engineering

  • Deep understanding of the differences between data engineering and data science disciplines
  • Practical knowledge of machine learning algorithms, model training, and evaluation metrics
  • Familiarity with deep learning frameworks and when they should be applied
  • Experience in creating data pipelines that support both analytics and machine learning workflows
  • Ability to guide data scientists on best practices for model deployment and production integration
  • Understanding of the full data lifecycle from ingestion to insights

Leadership Skills

  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain complex technical concepts
  • Strong project management capabilities
  • Experience in recruiting and building diverse technical teams with varied skill sets
  • Strategic thinking with a focus on long-term scalability and maintainability
  • Ability to balance the sometimes competing priorities of data engineering and data science teams

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in the healthcare technology sector
  • Experience with Unix Based systems
  • Familiarity with healthcare compliance requirements (HIPAA, etc.)
  • Knowledge of cloud-based data platforms (AWS, GCP)
  • Experience with real-time data processing systems
  • Background in implementing data science solutions in production environments
