Job description

Job Summary
The Machinist/ Toolmaker is responsible for setting up and operating conventional, special purpose, and numerical control (NC) machines and machining centers to fabricate metallic and nonmetallic parts. The Machinist/ Toolmaker will also fabricate prototype parts, and alter production parts for testing from drawings, blueprints, and sketches using various types of equipment.

Essential Job Functions

• Study blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample parts to determine dimensions and tolerances, sequence of operations, and setup requirements.

• Measure, mark, and scribe dimensions and reference points on materials or work pieces as guides for subsequent machining.

• Select, align, and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on machines such as mills, lathes, jig borers, grinders, and shapers.

• Calculate and set controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, feed, coolant flow, and depth and angle of cut or enter commands to retrieve, input, or edit computerized machine control media.

• Start and observe machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining, adjusting machine controls or control media as required.

• Verify conformance of finished work piece to specifications.

• Set up and operate the machine on a trial run to verify accuracy of machine settings or programmed control data.

• Fit and assemble parts into complete assemblies.

• Verify the dimensions and alignment of assemblies.

• Install machined replacement parts in mechanisms, machines, and equipment, and test the operation of units to ensure functionality and performance.

• Operate welding equipment to cut or weld parts.

• Confer with engineers, production personnel, programmers, or others to resolve machining or assembly problems and discuss potential and current fabricating problems as it relates to prototype work.

• Identify and acquire materials for required parts.

• Support production equipment in critical situations.

• Produce finished machined parts and modify existing parts as required according to engineering specifications and drawings.

• Responsible for supporting the Engineering Group in the fabrication of prototype parts and altering production parts for testing from drawings, blueprints, and sketches using various types of equipment.

• Perform various other duties including but not limited to training, administration, and housekeeping, and ensure quality, quantity, and timeliness of the product or service provided.

Preferred experience

Education/Experience

• High school diploma, vocational training, and/or apprenticeship program.

• Apprenticeship papers with 2-4 years of experience or 10 years tool and die experience. Must know how to set up and operate lathes, mills, drill presses, and grinders.

• 5+ years' experience working in a metal fabrication shop, preferred.

• 5+ years' experience in an assembly shop, preferred.

• 5+ years' experience in the operation of machine shop equipment including manual lathes, mills, grinders, etc., preferred.

• 5+ years' CNC Milling experience, preferred.

• 5+ years' experience inspecting with various precision metrology instruments, preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Proficient in setting up and operating conventional, special purpose, and numerical control (NC) machines and machining centers.

• Skilled in interpreting blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, and specifications for machining tasks.

• Experienced in operating various machining equipment including lathes, mills, grinders, and CNC Milling machines.

• Competent in measuring, marking, and scribing dimensions on materials or work pieces, with expertise in using precision metrology instruments for inspections.

• Strong problem-solving skills to resolve machining or assembly issues, with effective communication abilities to collaborate with engineers and production personnel.

• Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel) and experience with Machine Control Programming.
