Should you job hunt over the holidays? Tips to beat the new year rush

The end of the year often signals a time for reflection and renewal. For businesses, it’s typically a period to wrap up the current year’s tasks before the holiday season takes over. For job seekers, this might seem like the least opportune time to apply for a new position. After all, aren’t companies winding down and putting off major decisions until the new year?
Not necessarily. While some employees may take time off or companies may close for major holidays, it’s a misconception that hiring grinds to a halt in December. In fact, many career experts argue that the holiday season can be a prime time to job hunt—and that stepping up your search during this period could give you a distinct advantage.
Why should I apply during the holiday season?
While the holiday season is often associated with relaxation and festivities, it can be an unexpectedly strategic time for job seekers. With less competition, active hiring budgets, and the chance to start the new year strong, applying during this time could open doors you didn’t expect.
Less competition
It’s important to note that other job seekers may be celebrating holidays and taking a break from applying towards the end of the year. Waiting until the start of the year to apply throws you in a much larger applicant pool where your resume might get lost. Even if companies are not hiring at that time, applying ahead of the curve puts you at the top of the pile once January comes along. Even better, the lower applicant rate at this time of year means clearer schedules for recruiters and hiring managers, which gives you as an applicant a better chance at some early face time.
Hiring budgets need to be spent
Year-end hiring often stems from one simple reason: budgets. Companies typically plan their hiring budgets in advance, and if roles remain unfilled or new needs arise, they may push to use those funds before the fiscal year ends. Unused budgets could lead to reduced allocations for the following year, incentivizing managers to fill positions quickly—even during the holiday season.
Start the next year prepared
Starting the new year with momentum can give you an edge. Recruiter and career coach Kieron Wright says that getting ahead of the game is crucial. “It provides a candidate with momentum going into January.” Because the end of the year can often be more calm for HR personnel when it comes to their workload, they can better evaluate their needs for the next year and ensure they are hiring the correct candidate. Once hired, new employees can be recruited and trained properly in the November and December months and avoid the onboarding process in the new year.
Tips to stand out at the end of the year
While applying during the holidays offers unique advantages, standing out requires a strategic approach. From managing your schedule to leveraging networking opportunities, here’s how you can maximize your efforts.
Create a schedule
The holiday season, in general, is often a busy one for many people, but consistency is key when it comes to job searching. Balance your applications with holiday festivities by creating a realistic schedule. Dedicating even 30 minutes a day to your search can help you stay on track without feeling overwhelmed. This routine will help keep you accountable and on track with your goals.
Take advantage of the slow season
“The same things are important in the festive season as throughout the rest of the year,” says Wright. “It’s vital to tailor your CV and cover letter to each job, extensively research the company you are applying for and their values. You need to make sure your own culture is aligned to that of the company for which you are applying.” This process is made much easier if you take your time and use the fact that there could be fewer applicants and a slower pace of business overall to your advantage. “Go into the process with a good idea of the companies or industries you want to apply for,” advises Wright. “That way, you aren’t just aimlessly throwing applications around. Make sure you are going about it purposefully.”
Network, network, network
The holiday season is rich with networking opportunities. Whether it’s through office gatherings, festive events, or reconnecting with old friends, use these moments to expand your professional network—you never know who might be able to connect you with an open position or potential career move! To further stand out as an applicant, Wright says it also helps to “connect with managers on LinkedIn or use your network to be introduced to managers. This always helps in raising your profile ahead of others.”
Be patient
It’s important to remember that while applying for jobs during the holiday season has its benefits, companies may still be operating with fewer employees during this time and that may leave you with some longer wait times. Stay patient, maintain a positive attitude, and follow up once a reasonable amount of time has passed.
The takeaway
Applying for jobs during the holiday season might seem counterintuitive, but it can offer significant advantages. With less competition, active hiring budgets, and a quieter atmosphere for recruiters, it’s an ideal time to stand out as a motivated candidate. By maintaining a balanced approach, leveraging the slower pace, and building connections, you can position yourself for success and start the new year with a fresh opportunity in hand.
