Founding of Columbia Hat Company in Portland, Oregon (US), which would become Columbia Sportswear Company 20 years later
In 1938, Gert Boyle, an immigrant fleeing Nazi Germany, arrives in the U.S., where her parents start a small hat business in Portland, Oregon, named after the mighty Columbia River. After her husband Neal's tragic death in 1971, Gert and son Tim take charge of Columbia Sportswear overnight.
Gert's unwavering courage propels her in the sportswear industry, a rarity for women at the time. From sewing the first fishing vest, she ascends to Chairman of the Board. Her legacy inspires today as we uphold our values.
Columbia Sportswear, a family business, is led by CEO Tim Boyle and son Joe, representing the 4th generation. With brands like Columbia, SOREL, Mountain Hardwear, and prAna, we're a publicly traded company with $3.4 billion in net sales. With 9,000+ employees globally, we stay true to our roots, crafting products for outdoor enthusiasts worldwide, whether scaling the Himalayas, practicing yoga, or strolling in nature.

We are committed to driving long-term sustainable profitable growth. Our business momentum and fortress balance sheet enable us to invest in our strategic priorities to:
Who better than our teams to talk about our culture and what brings us together?
👉 "We don't try to be 'caliph instead of caliph'. Here, there are no barriers between us. I found myself next to our Global Vice-President at a sales meeting, and we spent an hour talking about life and laughing together. For me, it's the perfect illustration of the sense of belonging and openness that reigns in the company" (Daniel, Sales)
👉 "I feel like an ambassador for Columbia, I love discovering the new collections, wearing our products, and proudly showing them off to my friends. Working for a brand dedicated to activities we're passionate about is a great source of motivation." (Christelle, Marketing)
👉"I appreciate the diversity of cultures and backgrounds, the opportunity to speak different languages and to see that my job has an impact. It's a world of possibilities within a single company." (Elodie, Account Operations)
Our CSR is built around 3 pillars:
Empowering people: Empowering our employees and the communities in which we live and work is at the heart of our concerns. By supporting and promoting healthy lifestyles and the well-being of our employees, partners and communities, our company thrives.
Sustaining places: A sustainable planet is the essential foundation for the well-being of individuals and communities. Our responsibility is to conduct our business in an exemplary manner, minimizing our environmental footprint on natural resources.
Responsible practices: One of CSC's core values is to "do the right thing". This includes promoting a culture of ethics and compliance. It also means maintaining our commitment to traceability programs and keeping a watchful eye on our entire product supply chain.
In 2023, our distribution center in France significantly reduced its energy consumption through strategic measures. We implemented intelligent LED lighting, enhanced building insulation, and optimized heating schedules based on seasonal and daily variations. These efforts led to a 27% reduction in gas consumption and a 13% decrease in electricity usage compared to the previous year. These results showcase the dedication of our teams in driving a more sustainable and energy-efficient future.
