In Finance department, you will be part of Product Control service who assures management, shareholders, and regulators that the global markets portfolio is correctly and consistently valued and accounted; advises on and quickly accommodates new business; all at a competitive cost. This enables shareholders to gain value
from the integrity of our financial information and supports Global Markets’ cost efficiency targets. Product Control is a key control function, part of finance and independent of Front Office, responsible for ensuring the complete and accurate recording of Global Markets activities within the books and records of HSBC, in accordance with
applicable accounting standards.
The Product Control team is responsible for ensuring that the daily P&L is produced and analyzed accurately on a timely basis and within daily reporting deadlines. Commentary should be provided for all material attributes of the daily P&L, including inconsistencies between P&L and risk. Quality analysis should be produced to support any requirement to adjust trader P&L and to enable effective review by Line Management.
This role has an international dimension, you will be permanently in contact with other HSBC teams in London, Krakow, or India. Also, Product Control is a key point for all market activities, that mean you will be always in relation with other Finance services but also with other business of the bank like Front Office or Back Office.
What you’re going to do:
• This role is within the Global Debt Markets/Equity Product Control Paris Oversight team.
• Primary oversight and escalation for team specifically around the day-to-day PL production and review of Primary Trading System Sourced P&L, P&L commentary and P&L attribution within a team based across Paris, Krakow, and India.
• Primary oversight and escalation for accurate reporting of PL, Balance Sheet and Off Balance Sheet for the business which is appropriately valued with respect to current best practice and in accordance with Accounting Standards.
• In addition, as owner of Accounting Risk, PC are responsible for Financial Reporting controls including Balance Sheet Substantiation and FX Sell off, providing guidance & advice across teams and keeping the FO and Group Finance abreast of any concerns around disclosure and completeness.
• To work with the desk and other functions on new business initiatives, significant trade reviews and various projects.
• To ensure that all output is produced in a timely and accurate manner, is fully reviewed before publication, and is completed to the level of industry best practice.
• To proactively drive forward a continuous improvement programme for all activities including increasing efficiency and controls through procedures/systems change process.
• To work with Valuations and CFOs to deliver a single transparent view of the P&L and Balance Sheet.
• Presentation of the business view of the P&L and Balance Sheet to traders and trading management.
• To ensure that appropriate MI is produced for the tracking of results, workload, and exceptions.
• Oversee the production of information on the trading desk’s funding position.
• Ensure that all team members have appropriate training and mentoring.
• To build relationships with key stakeholders including other Product Control Functions, IT, Operations, Front Office, Group Finance, Market Risk Management and Credit Risk Management.
Principal Accountabilities, key activities, and decision-making areas:
• Primary face off to all Front Office and Back Office senior stakeholders for HBCE
• Driving change in the Product Control area, both strategic and tactical.
• Oversight of aspects of all daily Controls and escalations.
• Management and sign off of month end balance sheet attestations & commentaries.
• Attend Business Control Forums and ensure effective escalation and cascade of issues in adherence to NFRO principles.
• Ensure compliance with audit recommendation, FIM and maintenance of the control environment.
• Lead in identifying and implementing process/systems changes to ensure function is aligned with best practice.
Leadership & Teamwork:
• Managing resource efficiently to maximize capacity and utilization, including in Krakow.
• Works effectively within the wider Product Control team.
• Builds and maintains a strong communication network with key stakeholders of the business.
• Ability to collaborate with the team, and in wider PC initiatives on projects.
• Ensure culture of collaboration exists within the team.
• Ensure training and cross cover in place to cover key processes.
• Ensuring that within the team there is performance management and improved employee engagement.
Principal Responsibilities :
• Preparation and explanation of daily and monthly markets trading revenues.
• Comparison of economic P&L with accounting P&L.
• Analysis, understanding and commentary on P&L using analytical tools.
• Follow up and supervisory of production tasks with offshore team in Krakow and India.
• Analyses and research to answer on demand from business (internal or external).
• Review of the correct application of SOX controls and business models.
• Be a key contact for internal / external auditors.
• Project management for new activities, new regulatory policies, or new products.
Conditions
Apply if you feel you match these skills:
• Very good analytical skills, supported by numerate or social science degree.
• Either Qualified Accountant supported by numerical degree, or minimum 5yrs post graduate experience working in analytical Product Control role.
• Good knowledge of the Fixed Income or/and Equities asset classes.
• Effective communication and interpersonal skills to be able to face off to management, both oral and written.
• Strong skills with Office software (Excel, Word, Access).
• Excellent relationship management skills, being able to face off with key Senior Stakeholders, such as Desk Heads, and provide summary of issues and business summaries to Senior Product Control management as and when requested.
• Demonstrated success working proactively both independently and in teams. Familiarity with operating in an environment where high levels of autonomy and accountability are the norm.
• Ambitious and motivated - a “self-starter” who is proactive and driven.
• Experience of working in a Product Control P&L function, with strong control focus and demonstrable understanding of the Product Control workflow.
Desirable
• IFRS accounting knowledge will be considered an advantage.
• Familiarity with Bloomberg, Summit, Calypso, Murex, Sophis, Sentry an advantage.
• MSc in numerical discipline an advantage.
