Descriptif du poste

Agence France-Presse, one of the world’s leading news agencies, is seeking a dynamic English-speaking correspondent for its Wellington bureau to report and manage news coverage in New Zealand and many of the Pacific Islands.

The successful candidate will provide and coordinate coverage of life in the region including general news, sports including some match coverage, science, global warming, technology, health and lifestyle. AFP provides coverage in all formats including real-time breaking news, features, in-depth focus stories, and fact-boxes and in all media including photo, video, live video and text.

Depending on news requirements, the correspondent will travel across the Pacific region and may be asked to go on missions elsewhere in the world.

The coverage area ranges from New Zealand and sometimes Australia to the South Pacific islands including Tonga, Tuvalu, Kiribati, Samoa, the Cook Islands, Nauru, Palau, the Federated States of Micronesia, the Marshall Islands, the Marianas, Guam, Niue, and Tokelau.

The correspondent will ensure coverage of important events across this area as well guiding freelancers and editing their production.

The job includes some administrative tasks mostly related to the office and the freelance network.

The Wellington correspondent reports to the news editor and bureau chief based in Sydney.

News demands, including for sports, may require working evenings and weekends.

The successful candidate will contribute to the fight against misinformation by helping factcheckers in the network and ensure they are trained in the various methods of online verification, now indispensable for all journalism. Online training is available here.
