The international news agency AFP (Agence France-Presse) seeks an experienced, dynamic and innovative English-language news editor to join its newsroom in New Delhi.
The successful candidate will be a clear communicator and cool-headed leader to help run a team of around 50 full-time staff and a large network of text, photo and video stringers.
The Deputy News Editor plays a key role in organizing AFP’s photo, text and video coverage over a geographically vast, politically disparate and socially diverse South Asia region of more than 1.5 billion people traversing India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, the Maldives and Bhutan. He handles daily a wide range of stories, from politics and the region’s fast-growing economies to technological innovations, environmental and climate change issues, sports – especially cricket.
As well as being an excellent writer and experienced editor, the deputy will need sound organizational skills to support the news editor and bureau chief in coordinating the daily news agenda across the region, with a particular focus on visually driven stories that can help differentiate our file from the competition.
The role also includes developing story ideas with reporters, as well as being responsible for staffing rotas and planning calendars.
The scope for colorful lifestyle stories is limitless and the deputy is involved in coordinating multimedia feature missions and editing a rich enterprise file that reflects the region’s diversity and dynamism. The deputy should also seek the opportunity to do his/her own reportage.
The deputy reports directly to the news editor and – in his/her absence – to the South Asia director/bureau chief and the regional chief editor in Hong Kong.
The role involves ensuring the credibility and reliability of AFP’s coverage and respect for the agency’s editorial policy and copyright guidelines. The successful candidate will have an interest in and good knowledge of social media and Users Generated Content, as well as of AFP guidelines governing their use.
South Asia is an important contributor to the Asia digital verification operation, and the deputy will be expected to encourage and monitor the work of the dedicated fact-checkers in Delhi, Dhaka and Colombo.
The deputy would also be expected to travel throughout the country and region for assignments.
The job requires flexibility in terms of hours, including working evenings and weekends when necessary.
In an ever-changing media environment, the nature of the job could evolve in line with coverage demands and the requirements of an increasingly diverse client base.
Extensive journalism experience and excellent news editing and writing skills
Ability to work under pressure and coordinate closely with colleagues in the bureau and the regional news desk in Hong Kong
