ABOUT DESCARTES UNDERWRITING

Descartes was born out of the conviction that the ever-increasing complexity of risks faced by corporations, governments and vulnerable communities calls for a renewed approach in insurance. Our team brings together industry veterans from the most renowned institutions (AXA, SCOR, Swiss Re, Marsh, Aon, ...) and scientists on top of their field to bring underwriting excellence. After 6 years of existence, Descartes has secured a leading position in parametric insurance for weather and climate-related risks utilizing machine learning, real-time monitoring from satellite imagery & IoT. After a successful Series B raise of $120M USD, we launched Descartes Insurance, a 'full stack' insurer licensed to underwrite risk by the French regulator ACPR. With a growing corporate client base (400+ and counting), our diverse team is headquartered in Paris and operates out of our 18 global offices in North America, Europe, Australia, Singapore, Hong Kong and Japan. ABOUT YOUR ROLE
As part of the Product & Program team, we're looking for an individual to take on the role of Technical Product Owner. This position entails overseeing the development and evolution of technical projects/products tailored for advanced users, including underwriters, data scientists and software developers.

KEY MISSIONS

Project ownership

  • You speak the same language as our Software, Data, and Devops Engineers: to understand the different components of a software system, you exchange very regularly with them to gather insight, understand needs and coordinate amongst the different engineering teams;
  • You understand and know our technical end-users: beyond being completely fluent in software terminology and concepts, you also understand how the end-users interact with the software system and what they need to accomplish their missions;
  • You co-define the project roadmap & manage a project backlog;
  • You guarantee smooth communication amongst the different engineering teams and technical end-users, gathering feedback, tracking bug resolution and sharing a transparent backlog;
  • You carry the product vision within Descartes: you have to communicate internally about your products, their evolutions and the vision they carry.

    • Project management

  • You oversee the delivery process, ensuring that technical milestones are met and that deliverables align with project timelines and quality standards;
  • You support cross-functional collaboration between software engineers to address any technical dependencies, unblock issues promptly, and maintain project flow;
  • With your technical background, you work closely with software engineers to track and validate the quality of deliverables.


    • ABOUT YOU

    EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS

  • Completed a bachelor’s or master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or Information Technology;
  • 3 years’ experience as a developer working with cross-functional teams including 1 year at Descartes.

    • SKILLS

  • Technical Expertise: Prior software development experience in industry;
  • Experience with APIs and cloud development (eg, GCP, AWS, Azure);
  • Technical Project & Product Management Skills: Ability to manage, with a vision on business value, complex technical projects with contributors from multiple teams.
  • Knowledge and prior experience in Agile methodologies (Scrum/Kanban). Creation and tracking of project/user KPIs;
  • Communication: Good interpersonal skills & ability to work with technical profiles;
  • Presentation: Ability to convey complex technical information in a clear and compelling manner;
  • Fluent in French and English.
