EMPOW’HER

Empow’Her is an organization dedicated to the social and economic empowerment of women. Since 2013, it has been mobilizing around a common vision: that of feminist and inclusive entrepreneurship, a source of empowerment for women and a catalyst for societal transformation.

An expert in innovative support methodologies, Empow’Her positions its work at the intersection of gender and entrepreneurship. With over 10 years of experience working with women, the organization carries out its activities in Europe and Africa from its headquarters in Paris and its three offices in West Africa (Abidjan, Ouagadougou, and Niamey), supported by its dedicated team of 80 staff members and the backing of its technical and financial partners.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Cocoa is a sector that offers great economic opportunities for Côte d’Ivoire. In fact, 60% of the world’s cocoa production comes from Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire, and 14% of Côte d’Ivoire’s GDP is generated from cocoa. The fruit sectors are also significant parts of the economy in both Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana.

Despite its importance in both countries, the cocoa sector faces major challenges in terms of value distribution, social inclusion, gender equality, and environmental sustainability. The fruit sectors, although subject to different dynamics, are not exempt from these environmental and socio-economic issues.

The Equité program, led by the NGOs Commerce Équitable France (CEF) and Agronomes et Vétérinaires Sans Frontières (AVSF), aims to address the environmental and socio-economic challenges of the cocoa and fruit sectors in Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana, relying on fair trade value chains.

Phase 3 of the program, launched in 2024, will focus particularly on strengthening gender equality, youth inclusion, and social ties in the governance of cooperatives and in the economic activities of fair trade sectors.

It is within this context that Empow’Her has been tasked with conducting a gender and social inclusion assessment, which will lead to the drafting of an action plan.

The assessment will be carried out in three phases:

  • A context analysis phase (country, sector)

  • A hybrid survey phase: pre-survey interviews and self-diagnostic questionnaires

  • A field survey phase including qualitative data collection from six cooperatives (three in Côte d’Ivoire and two in Ghana) and quantitative data collection from four cooperatives (two in Côte d’Ivoire and two in Ghana)

Empow’Her wishes to recruit surveyors to conduct two quantitative surveys:

  • A quantitative survey among the members of households linked to the ABOCFA cooperative in the Suhum region

  • A quantitative survey among the members of households linked to the AMOPPA cooperative in the Esuahyia region

OBJECTIVES OF THE DIAGNOSTIC

  • Understand the inequalities in the cocoa and fruits value chain in Ghana

  • Analyze the capacity of the Equité 3 project to impact gender dynamics and social inclusion.

  • Provide recommendations to improve gender equality and social inclusion.

The quantitative data collection will aim to:

  • Identify discriminations and inequalities in access to value chains.

  • Make visible and quantify gender and inclusion inequalities in the value chains.

  • Propose a foundation for in-depth evaluation work on gender and inclusion within a sample of two cooperatives in Ghana

During this activity, a Kobo Collect questionnaire will be provided to the surveyors, and an online presentation of the questionnaire content will be scheduled. The questionnaire will be administered in person by the surveyors directly to the targeted individuals.

SURVEY DETAILS

Geographic Coverage:

The survey will take place in the villages of producers from the ABOCFA cooperative located in the Suhum region, and in the villages of producers from the AMOPPA cooperative located in the Esuahyia region.

Target Populations:

  • Female producers who are members of the cooperative.

  • Women from the households of cooperative members.

Sampling:

  • ABOCFA : 166 individuals to be surveyed.

  • AMOPPA : 71 individuals to be surveyed.

Data Collection:

A questionnaire, taking approximately 30 minutes to complete, will be deployed to the target populations of the survey.

The survey will last 2 to 4 days per locality, between April 22 and 25 in ABOCFA and April 25 - 26 in AMOPPA. The questionnaires will be administered face-to-face with each respondent. The surveyors will use their tablets or smartphones to collect data via the Kobo Collect software. Depending on the logistics of the data collection, a transportation allowance to rent moto-taxis or cover travel expenses with their own vehicles will enable the surveyors to reach the various survey locations.

Profil recherché

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Hold a Bac+2 degree.

  • Have at least 2 years of experience in data collection or conducting surveys, with a good knowledge of the intervention area.

  • Have prior experience in projects supporting producers in the cocoa sector.

  • Possess a strong sensitivity to, or even experience in, gender issues.

  • Be familiar with the region concerned by the survey (Suhum or Esuahyia), with a good command of local languages being essential.

  • Own a quality PC, tablet, or smartphone that allows access to the questionnaire.
