Responsibilities

SGL/LGL is responsible for managing potential legal risks associated with SG's business. Our detail roles are as follows:

  • Draft, review and execute a legal contract for each products both in primary and secondary trading
  • Assess poitential legal risk in prospect transactions and onboarding new product type and advise as appropreate
  • Pursue litigations in Japan with external legal counsel
  • Maintain relationships with external legal advisors

Under the supervision of a senior member of the team the candidate will be expected to:
  • Gradually handle the legal documentation (general advice, new product documentation drafting, restructuration documentation etc.) of all kinds of debt instruments (plain vanilla and structured notes)
  • Assist the team on specific projects such as the (a) elaboration and update of the debt instrument materials (debt instrument documentation procedures) and (b) development of electronics tools, databases to improve the documentation process
  • Assist on general ad hoc matters from the legal team


Due to the VIE eligibility criteria a questionnaire will be provided. Please make sure to answer all the questions for an efficient analysis of your application .

Profile required

PLEASE NOTE that since this program is primarily an international development program, candidates cannot apply to a VIE assignment in their own country of citizenship.

Studies & experience:
  • Graduate with a Master's degree from Business/Engineering School or University with a specialization in international business or banking law
  • A previous experience in a similar position in a financial institution or law firm, in debt issuance would be appreciated

Language skills:
  • Fluent in English (B2-C1)
  • Japanese - basic level a plus for social insertion outside of the office - however, Japanese language lessons would be supported by the Head of Department

Technical, operational & Soft skills:
  • Microsoft Office, in particular Excel; good coding skills in VBA and/or Python
  • Strong interest in financial markets and understanding of complex products
  • Lawyer Skills Mandatory - analytical ability, excellent attention to details, time management
  • Collaboration skills and organization skills - to be able to communicate effectively at all levels (in writing and orally); capacity to plan and organize tasks and managing resources (such as databases); Be a team player able to build good relationships with both the front office and its legal colleagues
  • IT Skills - word is the tool used to draft documentation; important to have excel skills as need to be able to operate and update databases

The VIE assignment in a nutshell

This VIE in Japan is to begin as soon as possible but you need to plan 3 months between your application date and the beginning of your VIE assignment. It will last 24 months.

In case a visa is necessary, please make sure your passport is valid up to 6 months after the end of the VIE contract to not delay your departure.

The VIE is a specific contract, under Business France's eligibility criteria, opened to candidates under 28 and from the member states of the European Economic Space. For further information (including your financial indemnities), please see Mon VIE-VIA Business France.
