Joining the Global Bank tribe means you’ll play a key part in helping us build SumUp's own digital merchant bank. You’ll be part of a global, autonomous, cross-functional team that takes an aspect of our product and perfect it from concept to execution.

As a Senior Backend Engineer (Elixir & Go), you'll work on a highly-available, high-throughput platform that handles money movement through various payment systems like SEPA, BACS, Pix, Mastercard, Apple/Google Pay. Aside from building features, you'll consolidate systems with our global bank platform and ensure the reliability of our merchant banking systems.We encourage the exploration of new languages and services, empowering our teams to choose the best technology for new projects. Currently, our Tribe is using Elixir, Golang and Kotlin; Kubernetes, Terraform, Kafka, Postgres, AWS, and Rest APIs.

What You’ll Do

• Collaborate with other software developers, QAs, DevOps engineers, designers, product managers and other key stakeholders to design and implement backend services and APIs, clarify problems, outline opportunities, prototype solutions, ensure smooth deployment, continuous integration, and support existing functionalities
• Work in a global context with teams in Europe, the US and Latin America
• Provide comprehensive documentation and high test coverage
• Actively participate in selection of new tools, technologies and processes, code reviews and pair programming with other software engineers
• Help your team deliver business value by taking decisions related to the backend and actively participating in product discussions
• Build capabilities that bring value to millions of users worldwide
• Constantly adopt and actualise best practices with the team

You’ll be great for this role if

• You have professional experience as an Elixir Engineer
• Strong experience in software architecture and application design, with a track record of making architectural decisions and a understanding of fundamental system architecture and API design (RESTful and event-driven services)
• You feel comfortable working with SQL databases
• Good understanding of modern cloud technologies (AWS, Docker, Kubernetes)
• You have experience with CI/CD products such as GitHub Actions and ArgoCD
• You have experience with event / messaging platforms such as Kafka or RabbitMQ
• You have solid debugging, optimization and problem-solving skills
• You love to mentor people and share knowledge
• You have a passion to write clear, concise and testable code that your team can understand, maintain and improve

Any of the following would be considered a plus

• Experience with monitoring tools - Prometheus, Grafana, Honeycomb
• Experience with infrastructure as a code tools like Terraform
• Experience in the fintech industry
