Science is at the heart of our Business Value Proposal!
In the Science team we model risks from various types of hazards (extreme and chronic) and various type of assets (infrastructures, real estate, industrial clients, agro industry, supply chain). We harness our inhouse scientific expertise to:
Share state of the art knowledge on climate and natural risks within the team and with customers.
Model the probability of occurrence of extreme climate hazards and provide analysis.
Quantify assets vulnerabilities to various hazards, relying on internal and external sources of information.
Maintaining the most advanced methods and data for value at risk assessments and cost-benefit analysis of adaptation measures.
✅ Results so far:
We work with over 20 research centers worldwide on state of the art modeling techniques and data
We develop our own climate risk indicators based on the best available research
We have a great team of experts on climate change and variability, hydrology and hydraulics, geology and agronomy and specific fields like health, renewable energy, and nature.

Context
AXA Climate has developed assessments of physical risks and weather hazards in a changing climate at a global scale and is now focusing its expertise on local scale adaptation. AXA Climate has implemented statistical downscaling methods using CMIP6 climate projections and is improving these methods both for the whole globe but also over targeted regions, especially Europe to generate high-quality high-resolution climate data.
Job description
AXA Climate is looking for a candidate with an applied-science mindset and with a background in climate science or statistics, to reinforce the Climate Science team. The main missions of the candidate will be to review the downscaling methods used at AXA Climate, compare them against other downscaling methods and/or datasets and propose improvements.
Key accountabilities:
The internship will be focusing on climate projections downscaling:
Review the downscaling method used at AXA Climate and propose improvements.
A critical attention will be paid to the treatment of extremes of temperature, rainfall, wind and other variables.
Compare this method and the outputs against other downscaling methods (notably BCSD and the CORDEX experiments)
Perform model/dataset evaluation on relevant metrics to inform which models/datasets should be used by AXA Climate for risk evaluation. Tools such as ESMValTool could be used.
What you can expects:
Build a top-tier Environmental brand
Evolve in a high-growth environment
Work for a global Sustainable goal who will have a positive impact on our planet
Be part of a fun & caring team
Preferred experience and skills:
• Currently studying second year (M2) of MSc in Climate Science or Statistics
• Knowledge of climate change and climate models
• Programming and data science (Python preferred).
• Geospatial data analysis.
• Ease to understand and apply statistical tools.
• Technical reporting.
• Fluency in English or French.
The process entails a first call to get to know each other. Then one interview is organised within a couple of days to assess hard and soft skills that are in line with the insternship. You will usually receive a final answer within 2 weeks.
