The Opportunity

We’re looking for a hands-on engineering manager—someone who thrives on both leading a team and contributing to the codebase. This role is perfect for an experienced backend engineer who enjoys solving complex technical challenges while also supporting and developing other engineers.

You’ll be at the heart of building and optimizing Pigment’s hybrid transactional and analytical processing engine, designed to handle large-scale aggregations and high-frequency transactions. Our work involves cutting-edge compute engines and storage systems, pushing the limits of performance and scalability.

As a manager, you’ll mentor engineers, define technical direction, and foster a strong team culture—all while staying hands-on with development. If you’re excited by the challenge of balancing leadership with coding, we’d love to hear from you.

Your Responsibilities

  • Coaching up to six direct reports, typically every fortnight.
  • Setting clear expectations, gathering feedback, and delivering it effectively.
  • Supporting career development, using our skill levelling matrix.
  • Contributing to performance-related decisions, including salary reviews and managing underperformance when necessary.

  • Leading cross-functional projects with other managers to enhance our engineering team—whether it’s organizing technical demos, running an All-Hands meeting, or refining our skill levelling framework.

  • Who You Are

  • Extensive experience as a software engineer, having worked on production-grade systems—managers must demonstrate senior-level expertise during the interview process (typically 7–8 years).
  • At least 2–3 years of people management experience.
  • Strong expertise in object-oriented software design, using languages such as C#, Java, C++, Golang, Rust, Python, or Ruby(this list is not exhaustive).
  • A collaborative mindset with a practical, problem-solving approach.
  • A humble attitude and a desire to grow, regardless of experience level.
  • Fluency in English (French is not required).
