To support our growth and refine our pricing strategy, we’re looking for a Pricing Researcher who is passionate about modeling and solving complex business problems.
You will tackle one of the most complex and impactful problems for Upway: how to buy and sell e-bikes at the right price, at scale, across multiple countries.
Pricing is at the heart of Upway’s business model. It influences everything from sourcing and operations to customer experience and profitability. Your mission will be to design, build, and improve our pricing algorithms by combining analytical thinking, advanced mathematics, and a deep understanding of our business dynamics.
You will work closely with Lucas (PhD in Applied Mathematics) and the rest of the tech team (<10 people) to shape how we think about pricing and deliver solutions that drive real-world impact.
What you will do
Design and improve our pricing algorithms: Build robust models to optimize pricing for both bike purchasing and resale across multiple markets.
Tackle ambitious business problems by developing the most effective solutions, whether they are simple or complex. While we prioritize clarity and efficiency, we are open to using advanced methods—including LLMs—when they provide the best results.
Bridge business and tech: Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand business needs, translate them into analytical frameworks, and implement technical solutions.
Test, iterate, and refine your solutions : align with real-world business needs and operational constraints.
Own the full lifecycle: From exploration and modeling to deployment and continuous improvement—you will have end-to-end responsibility for your work.
Explore methodological approaches: causal analysis, economic modeling, simulations, and empirical testing.
Tech stack
Python (data science, modeling)
Typescript (NestJS + React) for production implementation
BigQuery, PostgreSQL for data storage and analytics
Docker, Git, Metabase for infrastructure and data visualization
Green flags: What we value
You think analytically first: You break down complex problems systematically, use data to guide decisions, and have a deep appreciation for rigorous analysis.
Strong mathematical and algorithmic skills: You have experience working on complex pricing models, predictive algorithms, or other quantitative optimization problems.
Business-first mindset: You understand that technical solutions only matter if they drive real business outcomes. You are comfortable navigating ambiguity and prioritize solving the right problems.
Curiosity and ownership: You are proactive, resourceful, and thrive in environments where you own your work from idea to execution.
Small, high-performing teams: You prefer working in a small team of highly accountable people who push each other to do their best work.
While our primary focus is on pricing research, we value candidates who can also contribute in areas like data science or engineering. We’re not necessarily looking for a jack-of-all-trades, but complementary skills are always appreciated.
Who you are
A strong background in mathematics, engineering, or a quantitative field (or equivalent practical experience). PhD is a plus.
4 - 8+ years of experience in data science, quantitative research, or pricing analytics.
Proven ability to think critically about business challenges and translate them into models and algorithms.
Intellectual curiosity and a passion for breaking down complex problems to deliver practical solutions.
Comfortable working in a product-driven, fast-paced environment where decisions are data-informed but action-oriented.
